Freethinking Stokie

A blog by a British, Pakistani, North Staffs woman providing analysis and discussion on the issues that our local media struggle with.

About me

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.”

Welcome to my blog. I’m a British, Pakistani woman of Muslim heritage who recognises that not all Pakistanis or Muslims in Stoke-on-Trent necessarily agree with what is happening around them in their communities. Literalist, fundamentalist ideologies are on the increase, women are becoming more and more disengaged with wider society and fundamentalism is holding communities and individuals hostage in the name of religious piety.

The main purpose of this blog is to help people who feel isolated, feel less so. This is a space to empower those who feel like their voice is being drowned out by louder and more intimidating voices in their community.

Whether you are religious, non religious cultural Muslim, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, Agnostic, Atheist, a former Muslim, or someone who supports any of the above, you are welcome here. I am pro-equality, pro-women’s rights, anti-racist, anti-stereotype and pro-LGBTQI. Hence, if you oppose any of these values and are annoyed by what I write, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Thanks for visiting and feel free to comment on my posts with any feedback or constructive criticisms (not abuse) or email me at If you do decide to send me abuse or threats, expect me mock you and laugh at you hysterically.

Thanks for visiting 🙂

I applaud you for your level headed well reasoned comments and commitment to promote an awareness and justice for the helpless, voiceless victims of a violent patriarchal society that includes many women on the side of the cruel criminals in the name of false pride of nationalism and islam and against all norms of common humanity of all. Eddhi reported said recently humanity ought to be higher than any religion.

This blog is wonderful! And I’m in support of it.

Well done for setting up a blog for such a noble cause. I too am from Stoke on Trent and feel that as a city we seem to be under represented in all manner of current affairs. I have always thought that as a city S-o-T would be ripe for an organisation promoting secular values, civil liberties and equality on a number of fronts. Our populace is very quiet on such issues and I feel that maybe I should make a bigger effort to address this as have you. Well done
